Violin / Wen-Yi Lo

Violinist Wen-Yi Lo graduated from Michigan State University, born in Hsinchu, Taiwan in 1991. After completing his studies at Taipei National University of the Arts, he pursued advanced studies in the United States and returned to Taiwan in the summer of 2023. Currently, he resides in Kaohsiung.

Deeply aware of the cultural disparities between Taiwan and the West, Wen-Yi Lo addresses identity issues in his doctoral thesis. Focusing on proposing a more rational approach to music performance and interpretation for Taiwanese individuals, he actively explores philosophical questions within classical music. He advocates that Taiwanese musicians should not merely accept Western traditions and perform music in ways expected by Western culture. Instead, they should proactively consider the characteristics of their own perspectives to achieve a comprehensive understanding of music.

In essence, although he is a classical violinist, Wen-Yi Lo's interest lies not in simply promoting and preserving traditional Western music culture but in reflecting on his own existence through music. The statement "constructing the characteristics of Taiwanese existence through music performance" articulates his concerns from a different perspective.

In his personal musical performances, he consciously incorporates concepts such as "out of the web" and "being born," emphasizing values that deviate from traditional norms. From the standpoint of Taiwanese cultural perspectives, these concepts are not against to Western culture but rather integrative and coexistent. Within the framework of Western musical texts, he reveals Eastern aesthetics in a current, non-intellectual manner, attempting to create a space of conscious rupture. This experimental approach is not only evident in his musical interpretations but also extends to various elements in his personal recitals, including textual explanations, venues, and presentation formats. His aim is to bring new perspectives to classical music in Taiwan.
